February 24, 2011- SAVE ETHNIC STUDIES!

The Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy invites you to a
Critical Issues Event:

SAVE ETHNIC STUDIES

with

Norma Gonzalez & Jose Gonzalez
Chicano Studies, Tucson High School & Rincon High School, Tucson, AZ

&

Nilda Flores-Gonzalez
Associate Professor, Latin American & Latino Studies/Sociology
University of Illinois at Chicago

In the last year, Arizona has become the site for multiple conflicts
around ethnicity and immigrant justice. Most recently, the state has
banned the teaching of Ethnic Studies in elementary and high school
classes. In response, eleven teachers—including Norma Gonzalez & Jose
Gonzalez—have filed a class action suit challenging the legality,
constitutionality and ethical nature of this law. Please join our speakers
for a penetrating discussion of contemporary immigration conflicts in
Arizona, Illinois, and across the nation.
