My name is Diana Soriano, I am bilingual, bicultural, and I am a UIC Alumna. I advise students in the College of Business Administration and the College of Education. When I am not in the office, I immerse myself in the UIC environment and enjoy exploring the city of Chicago by attending concerts, lectures, and cultural events.

AVAILABLE POSITIONS- GSC NEWS!

1) Job Announcement: GSC Student Worker Positions 2011-12
 
UIC's Gender & Sexuality Center (GSC), one of the six Centers for Diversity,
seeks two amazing student workers who are creative, confident, energetic,
passionate, professional, responsible, communicative, and diligent. The GSC
will be selecting undergraduate and graduate students to strengthen the
GSC's mission of conducting and/or facilitating lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgender, queer, and ally (LGBTQA) education, outreach, research, and
support.
 
Responsibilities will include administrative work (50%), outreach (25%),
program development (15%), and speaking engagements (10%). Student workers
will assist the GSC staff with mailings, publicity, database management,
delivery, copying, and scanning. They will also participate in various
outreach initiatives at UIC (east and west campuses) and the Chicago
community to generate awareness and provide information on GSC resources.
Student workers will help the GSC staff enhance their educational
programming and special events.
Lastly, student workers will have opportunities to showcase their speaking
skills when discussing themes of coming out, homophobia, and heterosexism.
 
Ideal candidates must have a passion for LGBTQA issues/themes and be excited
to work with LGBTQA students, faculty, staff, alumni, and Chicago community
members. Candidates must have excellent communication skills, exhibit
leadership in working independently and with a team, be knowledgeable of the
UIC campus (east and west), have experience working with students of diverse
backgrounds, and be innovative.
 
Mandatory Training Dates (Paid): Tuesday, August 16- Thursday, August 18,
2011
 
Start Date: Monday, August 22, 2011
 
Semester/s: Fall 2010 & Spring 2011
 
Hours: Minimum of 10 Hours per Week plus 3 Hours per Month
 
Location: GSC Main Office, Rainbow Resource, UIC Campus

2) Job Announcement Association of Latino Men for Action

 
Position Title: Program Coordinator
Report to: ALMA Board of Directors
Status: Full Time, (Contractual)
 
The Association of Latino Men for Action (ALMA), founded in 1989, provides
educational, peer support groups, and advocacy programs/activities for and
on behalf of gay, bisexual, or questioning (GBQ men). For over two decades,
ALMA has nurtured a group identity based on the experiences of GBQ Latino
men and has become an important voice on social and political issues both
locally and nationally.  ALMA mission is to empower Latino gay, bisexual and
questioning men by providing support, advocacy and leadership opportunities
through innovative cultural programming.
 
ALMA is looking to immediately hire a the Program Coordinator who will work
with coalition partners to develop agency policies that are more inclusive;
design, conduct and coordinate specific cultural competency training with
and among the partners; and finally develop with the partners a joint health
advocacy agenda. In support of those activities, this person will may be
expected to develop policy and legislative briefs; create training
materials; coordinate and staff the activities of partner working group as
well as work with Latino leaders that are gay and non-gay to increase their
effective participation in policy development and help build alliances
between the general Latino and gay community to better advocate and improve
services to meet the health needs of all the Latino community. The ideal
candidate will have experience working with both the Latino and gay
communities. This person must be able demonstrate strong interpersonal and
cross-cultural communication skills, excellent presentation and writing
skills and at least 2-3 years experience in some type of project management.
A Bachelor¹s Degree is required and bilingual English and Spanish is
preferred.  Position is for one year with potential continuation based on
funding.

3) Lesbian Fear of Crime Research Project
This just in to the GSC:
 
³If you are an adult lesbian living in Chicago, I¹d like to interview you!
I am a lesbian and a graduate student doing research to learn more about
what crimes lesbians fear, what lesbians in Chicago experience in relation
to riskand sfatey in their neighborhoods and elsewhere, and how lesbians
manage their fears and safrety.  Often the experiences of lesbians are
overlooked in research about violence and fear of crime.  Help me make our
voices heard.²
 
Interviews will be conducted July 25th-August 12th and usually last 1 to 2
hours.
