2011 Summer Research Internships – Clinical Cardiology
Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation is pleased to offer
research internship opportunities once again this summer for
undergraduate premed students and those studying other health
care disciplines in an accredited degree program. Internships
are designed to give students professional experience in the
areas of research and cardiovascular healthcare. Interns are
integrated into a research area and assigned to work on a
clinical research project. They will also have the chance
to watch cardiovascular surgery, shadow nurse practitioners,
and observe cath labs, stress testing, and CT/MRIs, among
other things.
Feedback from a 2010 intern: “There is no better place where
you can get a holistic view of healthcare while having the
responsibility to work on your own research project. It is
the perfect opportunity for interactive learning, critical
thinking, and relationship building. There is nothing more
awesome than getting to be a part of a state-of-the-art,
cutting-edge research facility while learning the ins and
outs of the healthcare team. The physicians have high
expectations of the interns, but they never leave you with
a project that you cannot handle. If you want to work hard
and learn a lot, this program is for you.”
Internships will be full-time, 10-12 weeks in duration, and
offer a modest stipend of $8 per hour and paid parking. All
internships will take place on the campus of Abbott
Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Out-of-state
participants in previous years were able to sublet apartments
near the University of Minnesota and reported the short-term
relocation as being very worthwhile. We regard diversity in
the internship program as an important factor in providing a
rich learning environment for participants.
