ASAM Osaka Study Abroad Informational Session, 1/31/11, 2-3:30 pm

Have you heard about the amazing Study Abroad Program 
that is taking place this summer 2011 in Osaka, Japan 
that is being taught by Prof. Kevin Kumashiro?

On behalf of the Asian American Studies Program and the
Study Abroad Office, you are cordially invited to attend 
an informational session to learn more about this program, 
the course, and the application process. You will also have 
an opportunity to meet and hear from Dr. Kumashiro as
well as other students who will share their experiences 
about studying abroad.

“YOUTH AND DIVERSITY” Summer 2011 Program in Osaka, Japan
Duration:   June 13 – July 22, 2011

June 13 - June 25 in Chicago
June 26 - July 22 in Osaka

INSTRUCTOR:  Dr. Kevin Kumashiro, Professor of Asian American 
Studies and Education

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
What are the experiences of young people in Japan today, 
both in an out of schools?  How do they compare with youth 
in the United States? Do diversity and justice mean different 
things in different contexts? This program examines youth, 
diversity, and social justice in Japan with comparisons to the 
United States, and in particular, Asian American youth.
Students spend the first two weeks in Chicago learning 
frameworks for comparative and cross-national study.  
The remaining four weeks will take place in Japan, primarily 
the city of Osaka, with shorter trips to Tokyo, Kyoto, and other
cities, learning from professors about such topics as
ethnic and gender diversity, spirituality, educational reform, 
political controversies, and community organizing. This program 
is filled with cultural histories and traditions, along with visits 
to cultural sites and educational institutions. Students will do 
guided fieldwork, and will have opportunities to interact with local 
university students and school teachers.

ELIGIBILITY
Students must be enrolled at UIC at time of application and  
completed 12 hours at UIC with a minimum GPA of 2.5.  Graduate 
students are eligible to apply.

COST
Program fee is $4,000 and it includes tuition, housing, orientations, 
and excursions. Additional expenses include: airfare, meals, and personal
expenses. Financial Aid may apply. This program is generously subsidized
by the Asian American Studies Program. Scholarships up to $4,000 are
available to eligible undergraduate students.
