Attracting and retaining a diverse campus community requires having a nurturing and
supportive institutional culture. To that end this session will explore the nature
and purpose of specific cultural centers and the evolution of multicultural centers.
During this exploration we will examine issues such as funding, staffing, inadequate
facilities, the challenges of transitioning from a specific center to sharing
occupancy in a multicultural center, and the administration's impact on the success
of the transition. Also information will be shared on the background and rationale
for constructing the Multicultural Center at Western Illinois University.

The Centers for Diversity include: African-American Cultural Center, Asian American
Resource and Cultural Center, Gender and Sexuality Center, Rafael Cintron-Ortiz
Latino Cultural Center, Women's Leadership and Resource Center
